choosing where to go

Where in the world we actually go

Our journeys run across five regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, Central America and the United States. That is a deliberate limit. Every destination on this site exists because we or our on-the-ground partners know it well enough to answer the small questions, which road is worth the extra hour, which room catches the morning light, which month the crowds arrive. South America is a region we are still building; there is a page for it, but there is no inventory behind it yet, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

Within each region the offering is narrow on purpose. A handful of countries, a handful of retreats in each, chosen for slow travel rather than coverage. If you are looking for a catalogue of every country on earth, this is not that. If you are looking for a week you can trust, start with the region that already makes you curious.

How to choose a region

Most travellers choose a destination by photograph. It is more useful to choose by the kind of tiredness you are carrying.

If you want wilderness and scale

Africa answers that best. Botswana's delta channels and Namibia's dunes work on the nervous system through sheer space and silence, and the days are structured around light rather than a schedule.

If you want ritual, altitude and old ground

Asia is the region for travellers drawn to temples at first light, mountain air and a culture with a long practice of stillness. Expect early mornings, a little physical effort, and a stronger sense of being a guest.

If you want warmth, water and short travel days

Central America keeps distances modest and days green and humid, with rainforest and coast often within the same morning. Europe suits travellers who want walkable towns, long tables and a shoulder-season climate. The United States is the choice when you want desert light and open road without leaving the continent.

What our journeys have in common

Wherever you go, the structure holds. Small groups. Boutique lodges, converted historic buildings and family-run camps rather than resorts. Movement and rest built into the day rather than bolted onto it. Guides who live where they guide, and kitchens that cook what grows nearby.

You will usually find a slow first day, a physically fuller middle, and an unhurried close, because that is the sequence people come home rested from. Free time is treated as part of the itinerary, not the gap between the parts we planned.

Every trip listed here can also be run privately for a group, and any of them can be used as a starting point for something built from scratch. If two regions are competing in your head, write to us with both and we will tell you honestly which one fits the month you can travel.
