Retreats in North America

The American Southwest, and why we started there

Our North American work currently centres on the United States, and specifically on the desert Southwest around Sedona. It is one region rather than a national tour, because the red-rock country does something particular that a broad itinerary would dilute: it is quiet, it is stark, and it puts a person back in proportion within about a day.

For travellers who cannot spend a long-haul week away, this is the retreat that requires the least of your calendar and still changes the frame. Short domestic flights, no visa complexity for US travellers, and a landscape that looks nothing like the life you left on Tuesday.

What a desert week involves

Days in red-rock country are shaped by heat, altitude and light, in that order.

Altitude and air

Sedona sits at elevation and the air is dry. That means water constantly, a slower first day, and lip balm you will actually use. Most people feel the altitude only as slightly shorter breath on the first climb, but it is worth respecting rather than powering through.

Morning practice, outdoors

The best hours are early. Yoga and breathwork happen on rock and open ground before the heat builds, and hikes go out at first light. By mid-afternoon the desert asks you to stop, which is a discipline most visitors are grateful for by day three.

Night skies and temperature swing

Desert nights drop sharply. A warm layer is not optional even in summer, and the reward is a sky that makes the evening the social centre of the day.

Where the region is heading

North America is the newest region on this site and the smallest, so it is worth being direct about what exists today: the United States, with Sedona as the anchor. We are not listing Canada or Mexico journeys we cannot yet deliver well.

That does not mean the map is closed. Custom groups regularly ask us for canyon country, coastal California and mountain-town itineraries, and we plan those on request when we have partners we trust on the ground.

If you have a group and a Southwest week in mind, or a different corner of the country you think we should know about, tell us. Requests are how the destination list here has grown so far.

Fitting a Southwest retreat around a working life

A domestic retreat solves a problem that long-haul travel cannot: you can leave on a Sunday and be present again the following weekend without losing days to jet lag at either end. Travellers from either American coast reach northern Arizona in a single flight and a scenic drive, and there is no visa, no vaccination schedule and no currency to think about.

That makes this the region we most often suggest to people who are curious about retreats but unwilling to commit two weeks to find out. It is also the easiest place to bring a group with wildly different travel experience, since nobody has to navigate an unfamiliar system to feel competent here.

Groups gathering from several cities usually meet at the airport rather than at the lodge, which turns the drive north into the first shared hour of the week. If your people are scattered across time zones, tell us where they are flying from and we will shape the arrival day around the latest of them.
