Namibia is a country you travel for emptiness rather than abundance. The Namib has been arid for millions of years, and the landscape has the composed, worked quality of something very old: apricot dunes rising in clean lines at Sossusvlei, the bleached camelthorn skeletons of Deadvlei, gravel plains where oryx appear at improbable distances.

Most travellers notice the same thing on the second or third day: the absence of sound stops registering as strange and starts registering as relief. There is no traffic, no distant machinery, often no other group. For people who arrive frayed, that is the actual therapy of a Namibian week, and it is why we resist the urge to over-programme it.

Stargazing is the natural evening ritual. With almost no light pollution the Milky Way is bright enough to cast the faintest shadow, and it is worth staying outside in the cold for an hour longer than is comfortable.
