Winter Yoga Retreats: Where to Find Sun From December to March

By Lesley Davies ·

A winter yoga retreat is one of the best gifts you can give yourself in the darkest months of the year: warm mornings on the mat, sun on your skin and long evenings outdoors while home is cold and gray. The catch is that winter shrinks the map. Much of the Mediterranean is cool and quiet from December to March, African safaris are in their rainy season, and some places that look tropical are at their wettest.

This guide covers where our retreats are at their best in winter, what the weather is really like there, and how to plan a winter week, whether you are joining a retreat or hosting one.

Where to go for a winter yoga retreat: the short answer

For a winter yoga retreat between December and March, choose Costa Rica's Pacific coast or Dominica for tropical sun, Tenerife for the mildest winter in Europe, India's Golden Triangle for warm, dry days, or Bocas del Toro in February and March. Most of the Mediterranean is cool in winter, and African safaris are at their best from May to October.

Why winter changes the map

Three patterns decide where a winter retreat works. First, the tropics have dry seasons, and in Central America and the Caribbean they fall in the northern winter. Second, the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, according to the National Hurricane Center, so a Caribbean retreat between December and March falls outside it. Third, the seasons are reversed in southern Africa, so December to March is summer there, and it is the rainy season.

Closer to home, winter is cool on most Mediterranean coasts, many island hotels close for the season, and mountain destinations are cold. They are wonderful at other times of year, which we cover at the end of this guide.

Costa Rica: the most reliable winter sun

Guanacaste, on Costa Rica's North Pacific coast, is the most arid region of the country. Its dry season runs from December to April, according to Costa Rica Experts, which makes it one of the most dependable winter escapes from the US. It is also high season, so book early.

Our Costa Rica yoga retreat is based in Tamarindo and pairs daily practice with a horseback ride through jungle trails and along the beach, a sunset sound healing ceremony with singing bowls and gongs, a private sail with snorkeling and a cacao ceremony led by a local practitioner. Liberia's international airport is about an hour away by road, with nonstop flights from a number of US cities. Our Costa Rica retreat guide has more on the region.

Dominica: rainforest and waterfalls in the dry season

Dominica's drier stretch runs from about January to May, according to Kuoni, and by then hurricane season is over. It is the season for rainforest hikes, river pools and waterfalls without the heaviest rain.

Our Dominica yoga retreat visits Emerald Pool, Spanny Falls and Jacko Falls in a day, spends a day with the Kalinago people, Dominica's Indigenous community, and adds snorkeling, a whale and dolphin watching trip and the sulfur springs near Trafalgar Falls. Nonstop flights from Miami and Newark have made the island far easier to reach, though schedules change by season. Our guide to choosing a Caribbean yoga retreat compares it with Panama and Costa Rica.

Tenerife: Europe's mildest winter

Tenerife calls itself the island of eternal spring, and the numbers back it up. The official Tenerife tourism site lists average highs of 21°C in January and 22°C in February, about 70°F, and describes the south of the island as drier and sunnier than the north. You can even find snow on the slopes of Mount Teide in the morning and swim on the south coast in the afternoon.

Our Tenerife yoga retreat is based in El Médano on the south coast, with sunrise yoga by the sea, a guided hike among the craters of Teide National Park, a snorkel tour and a visit to an organic farm in the Orotava Valley. Most US travelers connect through Madrid. Our Spain yoga retreat guide compares Tenerife with Spain's Mediterranean coasts.

India: the Golden Triangle in its best season

Northern India is at its most comfortable from October to March, the season the official Taj Mahal website names as the best time to visit. Days are warm and dry, nights are cool, and Ranthambore National Park reopens for safaris on October 1.

Our golden triangle yoga retreat includes the Taj Mahal at sunrise, two jeep safaris at Ranthambore and the palaces of Jaipur. Two winter cautions: fog can delay early flights and trains in northern India, and the State Department describes air pollution as a significant issue in many Indian cities, with seasonal smog. Remember too that the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.

Bocas del Toro: late winter on the Caribbean

Panama's Caribbean islands have no true dry season, but Journey Latin America notes that February and March are the driest months there, while December is the wettest. The islands also lie outside the hurricane belt. Plan a late-winter week rather than a December one.

Our Bocas del Toro yoga retreat spends much of the week on the water, with snorkeling in the coral gardens, a boat safari to Dolphin Bay and a rainforest hike looking for sloths and poison dart frogs.

Morocco: a crisp, quiet winter week

Morocco in winter is not a beach week, but it can be a beautiful one. According to Original Travel, average highs in Marrakech are about 18°C to 19°C, or 64°F to 66°F, from December to February, but evenings can drop to around 5°C, or the low 40s Fahrenheit, and it can even snow in the mountains in January. Essaouira on the Atlantic coast stays mild, though winter winds can make it feel cool. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons overall.

If you love culture, quiet medinas and clear mountain air, and you pack warm layers for the evenings, our Marrakech yoga retreat and our Mystical Morocco retreat both work in winter. Our Atlas Mountains yoga retreat guide explains what the mountain nights are like.

Retreats to save for another season

Some of our favorite retreats are simply better at other times of year.

  • Mediterranean islands. Paros, Sicily, the Dalmatian coast and Menorca are cool in winter, and many seasonal hotels close. Plan them for late May to June or September to early October, as our Mediterranean yoga retreat guide explains.
  • Spain's Costa Blanca. It is mild for Europe, but weather2travel puts Benidorm's average January high at 15°C, about 59°F, with nights near 43°F. That suits a quiet, walking-focused week more than sunbathing. Our Benidorm yoga retreat is at its best in spring and fall.
  • Safaris in southern Africa. Chobe's dry season runs from May to October, when animals concentrate along the river, and Etosha is at its best in its May to October dry season, when wildlife gathers at the waterholes. Save our Botswana yoga safari and Namibia yoga safari for those months.
  • Mountains. Bhutan is cold in winter, though bright and quiet at lower altitudes, and Sedona is cold, with occasional snow that can limit hiking. Both are at their best in spring and fall.

How to plan a winter yoga retreat

  • Book the holiday weeks early. The weeks around Christmas and New Year are the busiest and most expensive in most warm destinations, so the best rooms go first. January, once the holidays are over, is often quieter.
  • Pack for two climates. You will leave home in a coat and arrive in the sun. Bring light layers, strong sun protection and a warm layer for cool evenings, airports and early starts.
  • Ease into the heat. Keep your first practice gentle, drink more water than usual and give your body a day to adjust before a big outing.
  • Insure against winter weather at home. Snow and ice can delay flights before you even leave. Our guide to yoga retreat insurance explains which cover helps when travel goes wrong.

Hosting a winter yoga retreat for your group

Winter retreats are among the easiest to sell, because your students are cold and the idea of a warm week sells itself. They also need the most notice. Winter is high season in the tropics, so venues fill early, and guests need time to book flights for the holidays. Start talking to your community in the spring for a January retreat, as our guide on how to market a yoga retreat explains, and price for peak-season costs with our guide to how much to charge for a yoga retreat.

As a yoga retreat hosting company, we can suggest the best winter windows for every destination. Our retreat planning services take the venue and logistics off your hands, and our free guide on how to host a yoga retreat abroad covers the rest.
