Beach Yoga Retreats: How to Practice by the Sea, and Where to Go
There is a reason so many people picture a beach when they think of a yoga retreat. Practicing to the sound of waves, with the light changing over the water at sunrise or sunset, makes even a familiar sequence feel new. A beach yoga retreat also asks a little more of you: sand moves under your hands and feet, the sun is strong and the wind has opinions.
This guide covers what practicing by the sea is really like, how to make the most of it, the best times of year and where our retreats take their practice to the shore.
What is a beach yoga retreat?
A beach yoga retreat is a retreat based on or near the coast, with daily yoga, often at sunrise or sunset, on the beach itself or on a deck, terrace or platform facing the sea. Days usually mix practice with swimming, snorkeling, boat trips and rest, so the ocean becomes part of the practice as well as the view.
Practicing on sand: what changes
Sand is a wonderful teacher and a demanding one. It shifts under every pose, so your feet, ankles and core work harder, and familiar balances suddenly feel new.
- Balance gets harder. Tree pose and warrior three wobble more on sand. Widen your stance, slow your transitions and enjoy the challenge.
- Wrists sink. In plank and downward dog, your hands press into the sand. Spread your fingers wide, or practice on firm, flat sand where it is more stable.
- Choose your spot. Firm, level sand above the high-tide line is easiest. Soft dunes are hard work, and wet sand near the water can be cold early in the day.
- Use a towel or a travel mat. A towel keeps sand off your face in forward folds. A light travel mat gives grip. Some people love practicing barefoot on the sand itself.
- Expect a deck or terrace too. Many beach retreats hold their main classes on a covered platform, deck or terrace facing the sea, with beach sessions at sunrise or sunset.
A sunrise practice on the sand, step by step
Here is a simple shape for a 30 to 40 minute practice on the beach, adapted for sand and an early start.
- Arrive and land. Stand or sit facing the water for a few minutes. Feel your feet in the sand and lengthen your breath.
- Wake the body gently. Neck rolls, shoulder circles, cat and cow on hands and knees, and a few slow lunges.
- Sun salutations, adapted. Move slowly, step rather than jump, and spread your fingers wide in plank and downward dog.
- Standing poses with a wide base. Warrior two, triangle and side angle feel steadier with a slightly wider stance on sand.
- Balance with a soft gaze. Fix your eyes on a point on the horizon for tree or warrior three, and let the wobble be part of the practice.
- Seated and grounded. Forward folds, a gentle twist and hip openers, sitting on a towel.
- Close with stillness. Five minutes of quiet breathing with the sound of the waves, or a short body scan lying down.
Sun, wind and the best time of day
The best beach practice happens at the edges of the day, when the light is soft and the sand is cool. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that the sun's rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., so sunrise and sunset sessions are kinder to your skin as well as more beautiful.
- Sunscreen. The AAD recommends a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, about an ounce to cover exposed skin, reapplied about every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
- Wind. Coastal wind can be strong. In the Cyclades, for example, the meltemi, which Britannica describes as a steady northerly that dominates the Aegean from about mid-May to mid-September, can push practice off the sand and onto a sheltered terrace.
- Tides and surf. Check the tide times, and keep your mat well above the waterline. Leave a margin, because waves reach further than you expect.
- Water and shade. Drink more than you think you need, keep a hat and sunglasses with you, and rest in the shade through the middle of the day.

Where we practice by the sea
Tenerife: sunrise and sunset on the Atlantic
Our Tenerife yoga retreat in El Médano starts with sunrise yoga with sea views, then a guided mindfulness walk through Montaña Roja and along El Médano beach, free time at Playa de la Tejita and sunset yoga on the beach. Later in the week come a morning practice in the hotel pool, a snorkel tour and a beach meditation with restorative yoga. With average winter highs of about 70°F, according to the official Tenerife tourism site, it is a beach retreat you can take in January.
Costa Rica: a Pacific beach garden
On our Costa Rica yoga retreat in Tamarindo, mornings begin with sunrise vinyasa, followed by quiet time in the hotel's private beach garden. The week includes a sunset meditation in the beach garden, a horseback ride along the shore, a private sail with snorkeling, a candlelit yoga nidra session and a seafood dinner on the sand. Guanacaste's dry season runs from December to April, according to Costa Rica Experts.
Paros: a week on Golden Beach
Our Paros yoga retreat is based at The Poseidon Hotel & Spa on Golden Beach for all seven nights. The days start with practice and breakfast, with a beach day that walks north to the rugged New Golden Beach, a full day on a traditional wooden boat with four swimming stops and a sunrise practice near the end of the week.
Bocas del Toro: Caribbean water all around
Our Bocas del Toro yoga retreat begins its mornings on an open-air yoga platform surrounded by gardens, with vinyasa in the morning and yin and yoga nidra in the evening. Between practices, the group wades among cushion sea stars at Playa Estrella, snorkels the coral gardens, takes a boat safari to Dolphin Bay and has a free afternoon for beach walks.
Menorca: coves and a pine forest
On our Menorca yoga retreat, the base is near Cala Galdana. A coastal hike leads to the cove of Cala Mitjana for a free afternoon on the beach, followed by sunset yoga in the nearby pine forest. Later, a day at Cala Escorxada leaves time to kayak and snorkel.

When to go on a beach yoga retreat
In the northern winter, look south and west: Tenerife, Costa Rica's Pacific coast, Dominica from about January and Bocas del Toro in February and March. Our guide to winter yoga retreats covers each one. From late spring to early fall, the Mediterranean comes into its own, as our Mediterranean yoga retreat guide explains.
If you are considering the Caribbean between June 1 and November 30, remember that this is hurricane season, according to the National Hurricane Center. Our guide to choosing a Caribbean yoga retreat explains how to plan around it.
Practice ideas inspired by the ocean
- Sun salutations facing the sunrise, timing each breath with the light rather than the clock.
- Breath with the waves. Let the rhythm of the surf set the pace of slow, steady breathing.
- A walking meditation along the waterline, with attention on each step and the feel of the sand.
- Sunset yin, with long, quiet holds as the light fades.
- A beach meditation at the end of a day of swimming, as on our Tenerife retreat.
- Metta under the sky, as on our Bocas del Toro retreat, where the week includes loving-kindness meditation dedicated to gratitude.
Our guide to yoga and meditation retreats explains each of these practices in more detail.

What to pack for a beach yoga retreat

Our yoga retreat packing list covers the essentials for every destination.
Teaching by the sea: notes for hosts
For teachers, the beach is one of the easiest settings to sell and one of the trickiest to teach in. Always have a shaded, sheltered backup space for windy or rainy days, plan your strongest classes for the cooler edges of the day, and check local rules before holding a group class on a public beach. Our guide on how to choose a yoga retreat venue covers practice spaces, and our sample yoga retreat itinerary shows how to pace a week.
As a yoga retreat hosting company, we run retreats on the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, the Atlantic and the Pacific. Our retreat planning services can build a beach week for your group, our free guide on how to host a yoga retreat abroad covers the planning, and you can browse every one of our yoga retreat destinations or contact a retreat planner to talk through dates.
